What is Soil Nailing?

Soil nailing is a construction technique that can be used as a remedial measure to treat unstable natural soil slopes or as a construction technique that allows the safe over-steepening of new or existing soil slopes.

This technique involves embedding slender reinforcing elements into slopes, typically using general-purpose reinforcing bars, although both solid and hollow-system proprietary bars are available. Solid bars are typically inserted into pre-drilled holes and secured with grout via a separate line, while hollow bars can be drilled and grouted simultaneously using a sacrificial drill bit, with grout pumped down the bar as drilling continues. Additionally, kinetic methods have been developed to embed relatively short bars into soil slopes. Bars installed by drilling are fully grouted and placed at a slight downward angle, spaced regularly across the slope face. The surface may be finished with a rigid facing or isolated soil nail head plates.
